Paper: Performance Tuning Guidelines for Windows Server 2012

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 03:47 AM PDT

Microsoft has released a paper titled: Performance Tuning Guidelines for Windows Server 2012. The paper which contains 150 pages is very comprehensive and contains performance recommendations for Server Hardware and the Networking and Storage Subsystems. Also performance tuning recommendations for several Microsoft and non-Microsoft workloads like Active Directory and SAP are given.

Nowadays performance tuning is based on more requirements than just plain performance, it's more related to finding a efficient mix between energy consumption, network latency and throughput.

The paper covers the following topics:

Key performance recommendations for the following components:

  • Server Hardware
  • Networking Subsystem
  • Storage Subsystem

The guide also contains performance tuning considerations for the following server roles:

  • Web Servers
  • File Servers
  • Active Directory Servers
  • Remote Desktop Session Host
  • Remote Desktop Virtualization Host
  • Remote Desktop Gateway
  • Virtualization Servers (Hyper-V)
  • Performance Tools for Network Workloads
  • SAP Sales and Distribution
  • TCP-E Workload

Thanks to Aidan Finn for providing the news.

Release: vOPS Server Explorer 5.1

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 02:53 PM PDT

vOPS Server Explorer (formerly VKernel vScope Explorer) is a suite composed of three free utilities: vScope Explorer, SearchMyVM Explorer and the brand new Environment Explorer.

The new entry, Environment Explorer would allow administrators to detect any efficiency problems, identifies VMs performance issues in configuration such as memory limits and any bottleneck.

The tool gives an insight of the environment and can help administrators to check if there is any issue or if they are running out of capacity.

According to the vkernel's products description:

Environment Explorer allows a system administrator to at a glance, see:

  • Overview statistics of all hardware and virtual objects in an environment
  • Counts of VMs suffering from configuration and VM performance issues
  • Details on efficiency problems
  • And to gain an understanding of how much capacity is still available for new VMs

Environment Explorer Features

Environment Explorer, a utility within the vOPS Server Explorer suite, displays vital information at a glance and provides performance, inefficiency and capacity management data with the following features:

  • Identify critical VM configuration errors such as memory limits and old snapshots
  • Recognize performance bottlenecks
  • Detect inefficiency/waste created by VMs with resource over-allocation
  • Find available capacity expressed as the number of additional VMs that can be deployed

KB: Changes to an App-V application are not included when deployed using System Center 2012 Configuration Manager

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 10:50 AM PDT

imageHere's a new Knowledge Base article we published. This one talks about an issue where changes to an App-V package may not get delivered when the app is deployed using ConfigMgr 2012.

=====

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You create a Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) application.
  • You deploy the source for the application to a System Center 2012 Configuration Manager distribution point.
  • You change the application by using the App-V Sequencer.
  • You deploy the content for the updated application to the distribution point.

In this scenario, when users run the application, your changes are not included in the application.
Cause

This problem occurs because the App-V Sequencer saves the virtual application's SFT file (.sft) using a different name when changes are saved for the application. For example, if your virtual application is named MyApp.sft, the App-V Sequencer will save the changed application as MyApp_2.sft. Without manual adjustment, the Deployment Type for the App-V application will still refer to the original .sft file name.

Workaround

To work around this problem, change the Deployment Type to refer to the current .sft file manually.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

Because the file name changes when you update an App-V application, Binary Delta Replication is not used to download the updated content to the clients. Binary Delta Replication is possible only when you work with two versions of a file that have the same name.

App-V 5 beta 2 client Setup Failed

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 08:48 AM PDT

Hello,

I'm getting "Setup failed while installing the MSIs. Asia" - when trying to install the App-V client 5 beta 2 preview. Have successfully installed on another PC.

Not sure where this "asia" comment is coming from I'm based in the UK and have no asian locales etc set.

Any clues?

Thanks Terry
