Removing stale applications

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 01:21 AM PDT

Hi Guys,

I have removed some applications/packages from my App-V server but they still show up on the client list and cause errors to be written to the event log needlessly. How do I refresh the client so it only sees currently published applications? I thought an sfttray /refresh would do the tirck but no joy.

VMware plans to abandon vRAM Licensing

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 02:51 AM PDT

Yesterday CRN reported that, according to their sources "familiar with VMware's plans", VMware is going to discontinue vRAM licensing program with the introduction of vSphere 5.1.

Abandoning the vRAM entitlement (that proved to be very unpopular among the community) for its previous CPU-based licensing model, VMware will keep vSphere competitive against the new release of Hyper-V 3 enriched with several enterprise-class features.

A lot of customers feel like they are being nickel-and-dimed on things, which hurts the cost model of virtualization, so VMware is going to aggressively bundle. That bundle scheme made little sense with vRAM.

said a source of CRN, who requested anonymity.

We expect the announcement during VMworld in San Francisco next week where VMware will unveil its official licensing plans, these could include bundled licenses and special package with cloud products.

VMware Offers vCloud “Test-Drive” with New Evaluation Service

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 01:04 PM PDT

On August 15th, vCloud, the cloud computing initiative from VMware announced to offer a vCloud Service Evaluation which allows customers to "test-drive" a cloud built on the VMware platform.

The idea of VMware is that the vCloud Service Evaluation would give to potential VMware customers the chances to "test drive" a cloud built on the VMware vCloud platform and to existing clients to evaluate vCloud features, as well as support for apps and virtual machines that VMware customers already have.

VMware strategy is to attract more potential customers giving them a free try and allowing systems admins to learn about the capabilities of vCloud. Obviously this approach to intrigue possible new purchasers was approved by VMware services providers such as AT&T and Attenda.

The vCloud Service Evaluation gives customers the opportunity to add an enterprise cloud to their infrastructure and migrate workloads between existing private cloud, the vCloud Service Evaluation, and VMware's extensive ecosystem of service providers.

Customers can register for VMware vCloud Service Evaluation, and beta invites will be sent out starting August 27, 2012, besides VMware will offer to try directly the service at the cloud services pod, within the VMware booth, at the VMworld in San Francisco.

HP and Citrix VDI-in-a-Box: Part 3 – User Experience Testing

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 03:11 PM PDT

In two recent blogs I described testing I performed to validate a Citrix VDI-in-a-Box and HP ProLiant reference architecture. The solution goes a long way to simplify the task of VDI deployment since it defines a low-cost, cookie-cutter approach for rapidly deploying VDI. Previously I ran a set of single server scalability tests to validate 50- and 100-user configurations based on the reference architecture, as…

Measuring User Experience

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 02:42 PM PDT

My role in the Citrix Alliance Group focuses on performance testing, especially for VDI and SBC reference architectures developed in conjunction with alliance partners. I spend the bulk of my time developing and validating reference architectures so that customers can deploy Citrix solutions quickly with less risk. While you might think my job  sounds like mind-numbing number-crunching, I get tremendously jazzed about it and the…
