App-V read-only cache on failover cluster Posted: 07 Nov 2012 01:42 AM PST Hi, We are setting up a VDI (XenDesktop) infrastructure. Our App-V (4.6 SP1) setup is the standalone client with file streaming like described by Timothy Mangan (http://tmurgent.com/WhitePapers/Microsoft_AppV_Stand-Alone.pdf). We use a read-only cache, place it on a failover file cluster and link it through DFS. When testing the failover capabilities we notice our App-V clients cannot start any app. The apps that were running before the failover occurred keep working just fine, but any app you try to start next give the same error: 39-00000002 - "The system cannot find the file specified". Only after the system is restarted the App-V apps can be started again. We tried using UNC instead of DFS to connect to the cache file, but that just gives the same symptoms. I notice the connections to the cache file stay intact, so I'm confused as to why the client wouldn't be able to set up new connections. Can someone shed some light, please? What happen to the PKG files in App-V 5.0? Posted: 06 Nov 2012 11:31 PM PST Hi I know the mechanizm of App-V 5.0 is very different from its previous version and I couldn't find anything about the documentation about this section. We have a VDI environment in our organization and App-V (4.6 SP1) is our main technology of Application Management. in App-V 4.6 we changed the "User Data Directory" to a network location so that all the application deltas (pkg files) will be saved and used whenever the user is logged on. in App-V 5.0 there are couple things I'm missing: I converted App-V packages to 5.0 successfully but obviously they're loosing their PKG files which holds all the important information + setting of each app. how do the pkg file can be converted as well to the new mechanizm which is very very different? and second of all, assuming there's no option to do so (which can be catastrophic because we have a thousands of users and houndrands of apps), how do I setup the App-V client to save all the app deltas on network and not locally?! thanks Tamir Levy This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now

Citrix Platforms as a Secure End-to-End Online Voting Solution Posted: 06 Nov 2012 04:53 PM PST It's Election Day today! I cast my vote earlier today. The voting process was very simple. I stopped by a neighbor's house and the whole procedure did not take more than five minutes. When I arrived at the office, I realized that it was about time to reignite the discussion about secure online voting. Since I have been working in the security industry for many…

Release: VKernel vOps Server Explorer 6.0 Posted: 06 Nov 2012 11:25 AM PST VKernel today announced the release of vOps Server Explorer version 6.0 suite. Version 6.0 is the follow up of version 5.1 which was released in August this year. Version 6.0 which is offered as a free download and is now also offered as a Virtual Appliance (VA) which runs on Hyper-V. Besides that vOps Server Explorer already provided appliances for VMware vSphere and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV). In order to run the appliance on Hyper-V, VKernel requires that either Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 R2 and System Center Operations Manager 2007 (SCOM) R2 or System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager and System Center 2012 Operations Manager are available as well.
VKernel was acquired by Quest in November last year, and since Quest now owned by DELL, VKernel is part of DELL as well. The vOps Server Explorer suite consists of the following tools:
Provides statistics of all hardware and virtual objects in an environment, provides insight in configuration and performance issues and gives insight into efficiency problems and capacity.
Assesses the health of a virtualized environment, identifying hosts, VM's and datastores that suffer performance, capacity and efficiency issues.
Provides Google-like search capabilities into a virtual environment Users are able to upgrade to vOPS Server Standard edition, which features remediation and pulls extra information from the environment. Information about installation and configuration is provided in the Installation and User Guide. Labels: Release, VKernel This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now
Posted: 06 Nov 2012 09:02 AM PST I am having issues with App-V 5.0. I sequence on a VM that I roll back to a state with nothing on it when I am done sequencing a particular application. The issue that I am having is that when I sequence the next app, it gets the same GUID. When I go to import it, it gives me the message: A version of this package with version number 0.0.0.1 already exists on the server. The packages are completely different names, but somehow are getting the same GUID. Do I need to be doing something with my sequencer on 5.0 to generate different GUID's? It seemed to work fine for 4.6. Thanks, Scott Forbus This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now

App-V 5.0 Client PowerShell Commands Posted: 06 Nov 2012 06:47 AM PST very nice to finally have App-V 5.0 Released. I don't mind about the fully PowerShell environment. that's great. but one thing I hoped will be fixed \ visible \ friendly is the access to those PowerShell commands in the background. on the client side I know I can click on Show PowerShell Commands to get the list of the commands that were running, but how to I copy them to use them manually afterwards? I can live with learning all the "Get-AppVPublishServer" or all the other Cmdlets. but what about all those neverending named PackageGUIDS and VersionGUIDS? why can't I just Copy\Paste that info similar to what we had in App-V 4.6? is there any way that I just don't know of? thanks Tamir Levy This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now
Paper: VMFS File Locking and Its Impact in VMware View 5.1 Posted: 06 Nov 2012 05:32 AM PST VMware has released a paper titled:"VMFS File Locking and Its Impact in VMware View 5.1". The paper which contains 16 pages describes what VMware has done in order to extend the support to a maximum of 32 hosts in a ESX cluster when VMware vStorage Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) is used. Versions prior to View 5.1 only supported 8 hosts in an ESX Cluster when (VMFS) was used, when NFS storage is used for linked clone replica creation.
The paper answers the following questions, among others: • What are the technical reasons for the eight-host limit? • Why is View affected by this limit while other VMware products are not? • Are there workarounds to overcome this limit? • How does View 5.1 overcome this limit? Thanks to Eric Sloof for providing the news. Labels: Paper, VMware This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now
