Release: Microsoft User Experience Virtualization 1.0 Posted: 01 Nov 2012 11:58 AM PDT Today Microsoft announced the release of version 1.0 of its User Environment Management (UEM) solution User Experience Virtualization, also known as UE-V. UE-V together with App-V 5.0 was first announced a public beta in April this year. Up until now Microsoft's solution for user environment management was called User Profile Virtualization, which was actually a combination of Roaming Profiles and Folder redirection. This solution isn't very suitable though in environments where users access traditional desktops, terminal servers, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and other devices using the same account. Therefore Microsoft partners like Citrix, Appsense, Immidio, Liquidware Labs, Quest, Res Software and others filled in this gap by providing UEM solutions. Most of them still have far more superior features compared to UE-V, but many customers can be satisfied with the UE-V solution.
While the roaming profiles with folder redirection solution the UE-V solution will apply settings when applications are opened, and save that settings when the applications is closed, in contradiction to the User Profile Virtualization which loads settings at logon and saves them at logoff. For UE-V to work another agent needs to be deployed. Settings location templates, which are XML based are used to tell the agent which applications should store their roaming information from the file system and registry to a network location. Templates can be generated with the UE-V generator tool. More technical information about UE-V can be found at this post at the Microsoft Springboard Series Blog and in the UE-V deployment white paper. UE-V 1.0 and App-V 5.0 will be part of a new version of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) 2012, which is available for Software Assurance (SA) users. Labels: Microsoft, Release
Watch the hottest Synergy sessions! Posted: 01 Nov 2012 09:55 AM PDT I may be biased about how outstanding Synergy was, but I've also heard from many enthusiastic attendees that Barcelona 2012 was the best Synergy conference in Europe yet! Likewise, I might be a bit boastful in stating that all the breakout sessions were great – but no one can argue that many were exceptional, with standing room only audiences. I thought you'd be interested in a list of the most popular breakouts, which ranged from technical deep dives to new product information. As usual, Geek Speak Tonight!, the happy hour event facilitated by CTPs, CTOs and other industry experts, grabbed the number-one ranking! According to one conference survey respondent, Geek Speak Tonight! is the "best session at Synergy! Thanks Kelly & RES for the beer."
Release: Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) 5.0 Posted: 01 Nov 2012 11:16 AM PDT Microsoft today announced the release of version 5.0 of its Application Virtualization Solution, also known as App-V. App-V 5.0 together with UE-V was first announced a public beta in April this year. App-V is the product which Microsoft acquired in 2006 after taking over Softricity which provided the product Softgrid. App-V 5.0 provides deeper platform integration, which allows applications to work more like traditional installed applications, the so called Dynamic Suite Composition which allowed 2 or more Virtual Applications to interact with each other is now called Connection Groups.
A big change here is that the so called Q: drive which is created after App-V client installation is removed from this version. Older App-V packages must be transformed to support the new version, Microsoft provides Windows PowerShell cmdlets to support that. Tim Mangan, Microsoft App-V has written an extensive article about what changed in this new version. App-V 5.0 also introduces a new web-based management interface, which is based on Microsoft Silverlight and now supports both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Tim Mangan, Microsoft App-V has written an extensive article about what changed in this new version. App-V 5.0 and UE-V will be part of a new version of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) 2012, which is available for Software Assurance (SA) users. Technical information about App-V 5.0 can be found at the Administrator's Guide on Microsoft Technet and Microsoft also provides a download with Documentation resources which can be found here.
