Release: Trilead VM Explorer 4.1

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 12:52 AM PST

Trilead has released version 4.1 of its backup solution for Virtual Machines VM Explorer. VM Explorer Backups can be stored on ESX, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD based storage platforms or directly to a SAN. With the release of version 4 Trilead expanded support from VMware to Hyper-V as well, a trend we see with more vendors which traditionally provided VMware-ended solutions.

VM explorer is offered in a Free edition, and a Pro edition which of course has more features as detailed here.

Version 4.1 provides the following new features:

  • Support for Hyper-V 2012 server
  • File level restore for VHDX disk files
  • Support for ESX/ESXi 4.1 874690
  • Virtual hardware compatibility check for ESX/ESXi and Hyper-V servers
  • Enhanced vCenter backup performance (VMware)

Release: Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 8.0

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 12:49 AM PST

After releasing a beta in November, Microsoft last week released version 8.0 of its Assessment and Planning Toolkit (MAP). MAP is Microsofts capacity planning tool, which it releases for free as a so called solution accelerator. MAP uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), Active Directory, SMS Provider, and other technologies to collect data in your environment and inventories computer hardware, software, and operating systems in small or large IT environments without installing any agent software on the target computers. This version focuses on assessment of readiness for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

Included in this latest version of the toolkit are hardware and infrastructure readiness assessments to plan your deployment of Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, migration to Windows Azure Virtual Machines, ready your environment for Office 2013, and track Lync users. Paper: HP DBC Reference Architecture technical overview

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 12:58 AM PST

HP has released a paper titled: "HP DBC Reference Architecture technical overview". The paper which contains 55 pages contains a reference architecture solution for database consolidation, provisioning, and running thousands of I/O demanding database workloads in a Microsoft private cloud model. The DBC RA provides a foundation for building a high-performance Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization platform that has been optimized to consolidate and provision hundreds to thousands of database workloads while providing extremely high availability at all levels – from the underlying network and storage fabrics up to the virtual machine (VM) layer.

The DBC RA is built on the HP Converged Infrastructure, including the HP BladeSystem architecture, HP Virtual Connect fabric, and HP P2000 G3 storage arrays. By designing on the HP BladeSystem, the DBC RA can be sized and scaled in a modular fashion, simplifying scaling up and out as additional resources are required. Additionally the HP BladeSystem architecture helps to not only reduce the footprint of the solution but also reduce the environmental requirements through advanced power and thermal capabilities. HP Virtual Connect provides the converged fabric for the DBC RA and the ability to specifically allocate network ports and associated bandwidth per the DBC RA requirements; a very important capability when building a virtualization platform due to the complex networking requirements. Coupling these technologies with the HP P2000 G3 Modular Smart Array (P2000) storage subsystem, the DBC RA provides an extremely dense platform for the deployment of enterprise databases that require high levels of storage performance.

The paper contains the following sections:

  • Introduction t the HP DBC Reference Architecture
  • Solution Architecture
  • Ordering and purchasing the DBC Reference Architecture
  • Deploying the DBC Reference Architecture
  • DBC Reference Architecture bill of materials
  • Wiring and cabling diagrams

Migrating from vDesk to Flexcast

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 10:58 PM PST

With 2012 drawing to a close, I've seen an uptick in customer queries about migration options for their old RingCube vDesk deployments. For those of you not familiar with that product, it was a workspace virtualization solution that basically separated a Windows installation into two parts – the host part and the workspace part. The workspace functioned like a "light VM" in the sense that…
