Release: VMware Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack 1

At the end of last month, VMware announced the Horizon Suite, part of the Horizon suite is VMware's VDI product view which was rebranded to VMware Horizon View and at that time updated to version 5.2. Yesterday VMware released Feature Pack 1 for Horizon View adding the following functionality:

  • Support for accessing View desktops using HTML, by installing the Remote Experience Agent with the HTML Access Agent
  • Unity Touch, allowing users to browse between apps and documents in a native mobile user interface without seeing the desktop.
  • HTML Access Installer, which configures View Connection Server instances to allow users to select HTML Access to connect to desktops

Installation and configuration of the Feature Pack is detailed in the "VMware Horizon View Feature Pack Installation and Administration" document.

Microsoft starts offering System Center Advisor for free

Microsoft last week announced that it will offer System Center Advisor for free to its customers. System Center Advisor is a cloud service that enables IT Professionals to proactively avoid problems resulting from server configuration issues. It can help you resolve issues faster by providing access  to current and historical configuration data for a deployment. Additionally, System Center Advisor reduces downtime by providing suggestions for improvement and notifying users of key updates specific to their configuration.

Comparison: VMware, Microsoft, Citrix and Red Hat Virtualization Matrix

In January this year, we reported about the extensive community work of Andreas Groth comparing the virtualization features of different virtualization platform vendors. The Virtualization Matrix received an update this week, now including Red Hat's KVM solution in the comparison. Andreas also updated Citrix to version 6.1 with data from CloudPlatform and updated VMware with its latest Horizon Suite announcement.

The reference matrix, allows you to select and compare license specific capabilities of selected x86 server virtualization technologies, separated by feature category (General, Management, Hypervisor and Extensions).
