Paper: VDI Smackdown – solutions overview and feature comparison matrix version 2.0

Posted: 12 Mar 2013 02:17 PM PDT

Ruben Spruijt, CTO at PQR and one of the two founders of the Virtual Reality Check (VRC) project has announced the release of version 2 of the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) smackdown. VDI Smackdown – solutions overview and feature comparison matrix version 2.0 contains 92 pages and compares the VDI solutions from the following vendors: Citrix, Microsoft, RedHat, Dell/Quest/Wyse, Virtual Bridges, VMware, Ericom, HP, Oracle, Teradici, Double Take, Cisco, Unidesk, Juniper, Cameyo, Spoon, Symantec, IBM, LANDesk, Novell, RES and Framehawk.

clip_image001

The paper has the following goals:

  • Provide an application and desktop delivery solutions overview
  • Explain the different desktop virtualization concepts
  • Explain the pros and cons of desktop virtualization
  • Highlight why application virtualization and VDI are a perfect fit
  • Describe the different desktop virtualization vendors and solutions
  • Compare the features of the various desktop virtualization solutions

Conclusion:

Which Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution is THE best?

It's impossible to give an accurate answer to the question without a better understanding of the

requirements..

In essence it depends on various areas as mentioned in paragraph 4.5, 'VDI Strategy'.

It's important to have a Vision and Strategy around Application and Desktop Delivery.

Designing, building, managing and maintaining the Optimized Desktop infrastructure using the

Right Technologies, corresponding vendors and products is an important step.

Success = Vision x Execution x Adoption. "This whitepaper is a useful resource in this journey!"

Paper: Hyper-V Replica and Riverbed

Posted: 12 Mar 2013 01:57 PM PDT

Microsoft has released a paper titled: "Hyper-V Replica and Riverbed". The paper which contains 14 pages and details how Hyper-V replica works in conjunction with the WAN optimazation solution from Riverbed using the Steelhead appliance. Hyper-V Replica provides the ability to perform asynchronous and frequent replication of virtual machines to another server running Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role installed.

clip_image001

The paper contains the following sections:

  • Introduction
  • WAN Optimization and Hyper-V Replica
  • Deployment
  • Test conducted and Results
    • Test 1a: Initial Replication of a Sparsely Populated Virtual Machine
    • Test 1b: Initial Replication with a Densely Populated Virtual Machine
    • Test 1c: Initial Replication of a Single Virtual Machine with Hyper-V Replica Compression Enabled
    • Test 2a: "Warm" Initial Replication and Snapshot Optimization
    • Test 2b: Replication of Subsequent Changes
    • Test 3: Extended Testing

Conclusion:

We found that the Steelhead appliances exceeded expectations in reducing network traffic in a variety of scenarios including initial and delta replications. The Steelhead appliances were easy to configure and Hyper-V Replica did not require any special configuration or deployment steps (for using the WAN optimizer). Over and above the built-in compression technology provided by Hyper-V Replica, the Riverbed devices were able to further optimize replication traffic. The time taken to complete and maintain replication and network traffic was reduced by up to 98% with 70% being typical for sustained and varied workloads.

Posted: 12 Mar 2013 12:25 PM PDT

VMware has released version 9.0.2 of its desktop virtualization platform Workstation and released version 5.0.2 of Player This version is the follow-up of version 9.0.1 which was released in November last year. The update is considered a maintenance release and resolves some known issues.

The following issues are solved for both Workstation and Player:

  • On a Windows 7 host, when you plug and unplug a headset several times, the audio card of the guest would not work. This has been fixed in Workstation 9.0.2.
  • When installing VMware Tools in Linux virtual machines, the The default screen resolution options have been standardized to 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768, or 1280×800 for the initial login. After login, resolution can be set to any value the user desires or Autofit can be used.
  • Image copy/paste now correctly function with Solaris 10 and 11 guests.
  • In VMware Player, the list of available NICs in the Automatic Bridging Settings dialog window is now refreshed without restarting Player.
  • A memory leak that impacted Windows hosts and guests has been fixed.
  • When running in a Linux distribution using the GNOME 3 desktop environment, Desktop folders now open as expected.
  • VMware Tools no longer crashes on Windows 2008 Server Core x64 SP2 operating system, with the following error:

VMware Tools unrecoverable error: (vthread-3)

Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation) has occurred.

However, Windows 2008 Server Core x64 SP2 is not a supported operating system for VMware Workstation.

  • Scrolling with a Lenovo ThinkPad UltraNav scroll button no longer requires excessive force.

The following issues are solved for Workstation only:

  • From the Linux version of Workstation, the Description field for a remote virtual machine now captures all characters entered.
  • When editing Workstation preferences on Windows hosts, occasionally a permissions error would be displayed. This issue has been resolved.
  • It is now possible to create a linked clone from a read-only template virtual machine.
  • You can now create full clones from a snapshot of a Windows XP Mode virtual machine.
  • A virtual machine created using Use a physical disk (For advanced users) from the new virtual machine wizard may display the following error when powering on: A fault has occurred causing a virtual CPU to enter the shutdown state… The cause of this issue has been fixed.
  • More detailed PCI information has been added and a potential problem that resulted in risk of rebooting the host when selecting Collect Support Data has been fixed.
  • Previously, when you manually disabled networking in the Network Manager and then attempted to suspend the virtual machine, the operation would fail and Workstation would show thean error The request to suspend this virtual machine failed because the corresponding VMware Tools Script did not run successfully…. This has been fixed.
  • The OVFTool has been updated to version 3.0.2.
  • Disk cleanup for encrypted virtual machines has been disabled until VMware can further investigate reports of encrypted disks being damaged by this operation.
  • Autostart virtual machines now power on automatically after upgrading Windows hosts to Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.
