VMware releases Technology Preview of next version of Workstation

VMware has released a technology preview of the next version of its desktop virtualization platform VMware Workstation, which will most likely receive version 9.1 once released. The technology preview can be used until October 15 2013.

This version provides the following new features:

  • VMware Hardware Version 10, providing
    • 16 vCPUs
    • SSD Passthrough
  • Expiring Virtual Machines
  • New Converter supporting Microsoft Windows 8 and Microsoft Windows Server 2012 andRed Hat Enterprise Linux 6. Support for virtual and physical machine sources with GUID Partition Table (GPT) disks, Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). Support fo the EXT4 file system and support for VMware VM hardware version 9
  • Latest pre-release version of the Open Virtual Machine Format (OVF) Tool
  • Windows 8 Unity Mode Support
  • Multiple Monitor Navigation
  • Power Off Suspended Virtual Machines
  • Remote Hardware Upgrade

Citrix announces VDI-in-a-Box 5.3

Citrix last week announced version 5.3 of its all-in-one Virtual Desktop Infrastructure solution VDI-in-a-Box. Version 5.3 will share technologies with XenDesktop 7, which was also announced recently. Version 5.3 will provide full Windows 8 support with HDX connections, personal desktops (PVD) on Windows 8, Single Sign-On for remote users through Citrix NetScaler/Access Gateway, and a new wizard-based SSL certificate installation and management.

Version 5.3 will provide the following new features:

  • Support for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 as a virtual desktop
  • Support for personal vDisks on Windows 8
  • Support for the latest version of the XenServer, vSphere an Hyper-V hypervisors
  • Single sign-on support from Citrix Access Gateway
  • SSL certificate installation user interface
  • Universal Print Server

Citrix expects to release version 5.3 of VDI-in-a-Box at the end of June this year.

Paper: Dell DVS Enterprise Reference Architecture for Dell vWorkspace 8.0

Dell has released a new paper titled: "Dell DVS Enterprise Reference Architecture for Dell vWorkspace 8.0". The paper which contains 71 pages addresses the architecture, design, configuration and implementation considerations for the key components of the architecture required to deliver virtual desktops, RD Session Host sessions or applications via Dell vWorkspace on Hyper-V 2012.

The objectives of this document are to:

  • Define the detailed technical design for the solution.
  • Define the hardware requirements to support the design.
  • Define the design constraints which are relevant to the design.
  • Define relevant risks, issues, assumptions and concessions – referencing existing ones where possible.
  • Provide a breakdown of the design into key elements such that the reader receives an incremental or modular explanation of the design.
  • Provide solution scaling and component selection guidance.

The Paper contains the following sections:

  • Introduction
  • vWorkspace Solution Architecture Overview
  • Hardware Components
  • Solution Architecture for Dell vWorkspace
  • Dell DVS 10-Seat Trial Kit
  • Converged Infrastructure
  • vWorkspace Desktop Cloud Performance Analysis Results (non-persistent VMs)

The paper concludes that 230 Basic, 170 Standard and 230 RDSH user sessions can be supported on the R720 platform with less than 90% CPU utilization and minimal impact on performance.

Microsoft announces Windows Server 2012 R2, System Center 2012 R2 and Windows Azure Pack

During its annual TechEd North America conference held in New Orleans this week Microsoft announced the next versions of Windows Server and System Center until now codenamed "Blue". Both products will have the R2 label. Microsoft also announced SQL Server 2014 and the next version of Windows 8, which will be called Windows 8.1 and that with the release of these products also a new version of Windows Intune can be expected.

During its annual Synergy event Citrix announced version 7 of its Virtual Desktop Infrastructure product XenDesktop. Version 7 will be the first release of XenDesktop as an outcome of Project Excalibur (part of Avalon) providing one install, one architecture and one console for both Citrix's Desktop and Application virtualization platform XenApp and XenDesktop.

XenDesktop provides the following new functionality (among others), detailed here:

  • HDX Mobile,
    • Translates multi-touch gestures, finger swipes, and inertia into smooth navigation and scrolling commands that are relayed to the hosted Windows apps in real-time
    • Offers native menu controls that translate pull-down lists and complex mouse navigation into the native controls built in to the mobile device for smoother app navigation.
  • HDX Windows App Mobilization SDK
  • HDX deep compression and redirection technologies
  • Redesigned Citrix StoreFront, the self-service portal
  • Clientless Receiver
  • Flexcast, providing both provisioning and personalization of desktops and applications supporting Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8
  • Physical to virtual (P2V) app migration analysis tools, powered by Citrix AppDNA

XenDesktop 7 will be available in June 2013. XenDesktop 7 is available in Platinum, Enterprise and VDI editions on a per-user, per-device or concurrent basis.

Citrix will be releasing a Feature Pack 2 at the same time as XenDesktop 7. This feature pack will bring improved user experience for application developers via an updated Mobility Pack, more scalability and cost-effective OpenGL support with GPU sharing on the XenApp 6.5 server, AppDNA to help accelerate application validation, Microsoft Lync 2013 optimization pack, support for Hyper-V 3 and Provisioning Services, along with enhancements to CDM (client drive mapping) delivering up to 4x faster download & upload speed.

Release: VMware vCloud Automation Center 5.2

VMware has released vCloud Automation Center (vCAC) 5.2 based on DynamicOps Cloud Automation Center 4.5 that VMware acquired in July 2012.

The product offers automated virtual machines and physical server provisioning on both on-premises and cloud infrastructures with a good level of process governance.

Among the new features introduced noticeable are the support for Hyper-V 2012 and KVM on Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.1, a better integration with VMware vCloud Director and resource reclamation for Amazon Web Services.
