Convirture: new version of ConVirt Enterprise Cloud with VMware Support

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:59 PM PDT

Convirture the company, founded in 2006 that offers an open source management console to manage open source virtualization platforms,  announced today August 28th,  the release of a Beta version of ConVirt Enterprise Cloud.

ConVirt Enterprise Cloud aims to be the single tool used to manage virtual and cloud infrastructures based on the open-source hypervisors KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), Xen, OpenStack and Amazon EC2. The new Beta version of the program would permit the management of VMware-based datacenters as well.
Arsalan Farooq, founder and CEO at Convirture comments in the press release:
As data centers increasingly deploy a mix of technologies, IT managers are looking for a 'single pane of glass' to manage all of them, which is what this version of ConVirt Enterprise Cloud offers, from our perspective, the hypervisor and cloud wars are meaningless. Whether it's VMware, KVM, Xen and any of the clouds, organizations just want the best tool for the job. With ConVirt, we can provide users with a management layer that also brings in Xen, KVM and all cloud platforms. It will deliver the everyday needs for their ongoing, day-to-day management of virtual environments.

What the Cloud Really Means to Most Americans

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 08:01 AM PDT

A new survey shows that "the cloud" is covering more and more of mainstream America. Not the white fluffy things in the sky that are also known by names such as cirrus and cumulus, but Internet-based services for storing, sharing and accessing data from any device and any location. However, while it's clear the cloud is going mainstream, the survey also shows that people on…

APP-V Read-Only Cache repository downtime

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:34 AM PDT

good mornng at all and thank for your time. :)

we are in order to implement application virtualization feature in our production enviroment. the infrastructure has been designed with 2 management server behind a couple of load balancer and applications repository is set up on them and replicated using DFSR.

we also use the VDI services so we have decided to implement the Read Only Cache feature, the best way to reduce storage and network requirement; the RO cache folder are placed on the same management server and published (but not replicated) with DFS.

I read a lot of consideration and best practices prior to start with the evaluation; i always thought that would be a simple and reliable solution, but i immediatly met the first problem.

when I need to update the cache file on the servers, all my VDI must be rebooted because it is not the user but the computer to bind a connection to the ro cache file. this could not be a problem if we decide to manage this task together with the VDI golden image update (windows update, etc). we can survive, OK.

but what happend if one of my server that host the cache file goes down? and if i need to restart due to a planned maintenance?

when the server comes up, all the vdi vm that point to the cache file located on that server lose the connection and they must be rebooted again! restarting the app-v service on the client is not a solution and I think that this kind of behavior can not be avoided not even with the NLB services.

is there a way to renew the computer connection with the ro cache file?

are these a real "well known" limitation for the ro cache?

someone have an idea about the ro cache implementation in APP-V 5?

thank a lot, i hope in your help, otherwise we will start to work with thinapp :(

Andrea
