Video: The Cost Benefits of Desktop Virtualization according to David Davis

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 11:33 PM PST

On January 7, Brian Gammage, brought to our attention, through a blog post, an interesting video.

David Davis, Virtualization and Cloud savvy at TrainSignal, Author and vExpert, discussed on the vmWare blog of a recent Google+ Hangout about cost and business benefits of Virtual Desktops.

Davis explored the financial and technical benefits of desktop virtualization, still using the concept of cost saving as a trigger, he gave examples of how an organization can have centralized control and application consistency increasing security.

What a great way to start the New Year by going to Citrix Sales Kick Off (SKO) and really start in turbo gear in networking products.   NetScaler and CloudBridge led the way in excitements at pre-SKO sessions.   Here are some pics below.     In addition, Sunil Potti (VP & GM NetScaler Product Group) and Chalan Aras (VP & GM, Cloud Bridge)' networking…

App-V 5: Catalog\Packages in Windows Profile

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 10:22 AM PST

Hi,

one question about the App-V 5 windows user profile.

I have some data in

AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AppV\Client\Catalog\Packages\IDs\UserDeploymentConfiguration.xml and UserManifest.xml.

for every application. What are this files for? This two files (per application) are blowing up my user profiles. Do I need this files? Can I exclude them from the roaming profile?

Thanks!

Regards
Tobias

Office 2013 release won't bridge gap between desktops, mobile devices

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 11:10 AM PST

It's still difficult for IT to deliver Windows applications to mobile devices, and the Microsoft Office 2013 release doesn't go the extra mile.

App-V Client Offline Detection

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 08:20 AM PST

Hi

Could anyone explain how the App-V 4.6 SP2 client determines whether it's in an online or offline state? Does it simply query the network adapter status or does it base it on whether it can find a streaming service (depending on client configuration)?

If I stream an app to a client and then disconnect it from the network, I can launch the app offline no problem. If I reconnect it to the network and then rename the package folder in the content share, when I try to launch the application again I get an error. Would the same happen if the server was shut down completely or the management service wasn't running?

In our environment we'll be using RTSP streaming from two App-V Management Servers in an NLB cluster. I believe I'm correct in saying that one of the limitations of Windows NLB is that clients will connect to the same cluster host indefinitely unless the host cluster membership changes? So in the eventuality of one of our two servers going down, we'll have to remove that server from the cluster while we restore it. What I'm trying to establish is what will happen to online clients trying to launch apps when a server is down (and we haven't yet removed it from the cluster).

I hoped that if the application was already fully cached then if the client couldn't contact the streaming server it would just use the cached copy but this doesn't seem to be the case.

Thanks in advance

Running executables from within the APP-V 5 Shared Cache without the app ever having been "published"

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 08:39 AM PST

One of our goals is to be able to run APP-V apps from shortcuts placed in a network "APP Store".  If we don't have to, we really don't want to install or publish the apps (via an APP-V server or SCCM).

I did some experimentation and I found something that might work (see below)....

Steps:
I sequenced XYZ app.
I installed the MSI of the XYZ app (above) on a fresh PC (running the APP-V client).
I then copied the local XYZ cached folder (C:\ProgramData\APP-V\{GUID}) to a network share.
On another PC (running the APP-V client) I successfully ran the program executable within the GUID folder on the network share.

I recognize that this method might not register the extensions but quite frankly the number of apps that will require registration will be few....and those we can publish.

Does anyone see any problems with this approach?  Is it unsupported by Microsoft?  If it works, it greatly simplifies our app delivery process (just have to create shortcuts in the App Store).

Comparison: VMware, Microsoft and Citrix virtualization Matrix

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 06:48 AM PST

Andreas Groth, virtualization and cloud architect working for IBM has created a website comparing the virtualization features from VMware, Microsoft and Citrix. This week his virtualization matrix was updated to include Windows Server 2012 with its Hyper-V version 3.0 hypervisor and System Center 2012.

The reference matrix, allows you to select and compare license specific capabilities of selected x86 server virtualization technologies, seperated by feature category (General, Management, Hypervisor and Extensions). The comparison is available at the following website: http://www.virtualizationmatrix.com/
