App-V 5 can't get scripts to run

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 03:03 PM PST

I'm testing App-V 5 and I find myself pining for OSD files.

I can't figure out how to get a script to run.  I've read through http://blogs.technet.com/b/appv/archive/2012/12/10/scripting-and-embedded-scripting-for-appv-5-0-dynamic-deployment-and-user-configuration-scripting.aspx and it says what files to edit but nothing about how to make these changes actually take effect.

  • Am I supposed to be able to just edit the UserConfig or DeploymentConfig xml's and then the script will run?
  • Do I edit them and then unpublish and republish?
  • Do I edit the xml's, delete the package, add the package, and then publish?
  • Do I have to do a user or global sync to get the changes to propagate to the client?  A reboot?
  • As was suggested in the post "App-V 5 and scripts" I tried exporting the configuration, editing that, and re-importing it.  That had no effect and when I exported again the changes I had imported weren't there.

I've tried everything above and can't seem to make the script run or find any hint of an error.  Speaking of errors should the Client \ Admin and Virtual Applications logs be empty?  Is there some sort of debug logging I can enable?

You specify user scripts in UserConfig.xml and machine scripts in DeploymentConfig.xml.  Why are there user script examples in DeploymentConfig.xml then?

Oh, and I do have scripts enabled via Group Policy and a Get-AppVClientConfiguration confirms it.

Here's what I'm adding to the UserConfig section:

    <UserScripts xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/appv/2010/userconfiguration"> <StartProcess RunInVirtualEnvironment="true"> <Path>c:\windows\system32\wscript.exe</Path> <Arguments>\\server\share$\test.vbs</Arguments> <Wait RollbackOnError="true" /> <ApplicationId>Test.vbs</ApplicationId> </StartProcess> </UserScripts>
Hopefully I'm doing something dumb, wouldn't be the first time.
