What I've enjoyed about Citrix's relationship with Cisco is the substance that backs it, especially with regard to product integrations. These integrations have given us the opportunity to work with some of the brightest folks on the Cisco team and identify new and creative solutions to challenging problems. The result is a product roadmap that has exciting developments with technology that "moves the needle" as…

VMware vCloud Director vApps functionality

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 03:25 PM PST

Help!!!

I am trying to understand if we offer similar functionality in System Center. VMware in vCloud Director announced vApps functionality.

With vApps Multi-tier application can be deployed and consumed as pre-configured virtual appliance machines, operating system images, and other media media with a click of a button from catalog. This enables IT to standardize offerings, simplify troubleshooting, patching and change management

If we have some thing on the road map that even that would be great..

Where are all my App-V apps?

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 10:08 AM PST

KBJust a quick heads up on a new Configuration Manager hotfix we released that may affect some of you. There's an issue in ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 where Hardware Inventory does not inventory Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) applications in Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) if the VAppCollector.exe process exceeds the 30-second time-out period. In this situation, no App-V applications are reported during the Hardware Inventory action.

This was originally posted on our Configuration Manager blog here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2013/01/28/hotfix-hardware-inventory-action-does-not-inventory-app-v-applications-in-system-center-configuration-manager-2007-sp2.aspx

Paper: The CPU Scheduler in VMware vSphere 5.1

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 10:18 AM PST

VMware has released a paper titled: "The CPU Scheduler in VMware vSphere 5.1". The paper which contains 26 pages provides detailed explanations of ESXi CPU scheduling policies to help vSphere users who want to understand how virtual machines are scheduled.

The CPU scheduler is an essential component of vSphere 5.x. All workloads running in a virtual machine must be scheduled for execution and the CPU scheduler handles this task with policies that maintain fairness, throughput, responsiveness, and scalability of CPU resources.

The paper contains the following sections:

  • Executive Summary
  • Introduction
  • Terminology
  • CPU Scheduler Overview
  • Proportional Share-Based Algorithm
  • Relaxed Co-Scheduling
  • Load Balancing
  • Policy on Hyper-Threading
  • NUMA Scheduling Policy
  • Experiments
  • Conclusion
  • References

The ESXi CPU scheduler achieves fair distribution of compute resources among many virtual machines without compromising system throughput and responsiveness. Relaxed co-scheduling is a salient feature that enables both correct and efficient execution of guest instructions with low overhead. The ESXi CPU scheduler is highly scalable and supports very big systems and wide virtual machine.

vSphere 5.1 optimizes the load-balancing algorithm introduced in 5.0. It results in noticeable reductions in CPU scheduling overhead. A policy change on hyper-threaded systems enables out-of-the-box performance of 5.1 exceeding that of a tuned version of vSphere 4.1. No special tuning is required to achieve the best performance for most common application workloads. The irtual NUMA feature introduced in 5.0 can significantly improve performance of workloads that are optimized for a NUMA environment. With vNUMA, virtual machines of any size can display optimal performance on a NUMA system. The vNUMA feature is shown to significantly improve the performance of SPEC OMP workloads. Such improvement closes the performance gap between the virtual and the native environment for high-performance-computing (HPC) workloads.

KB: 64-Bit UE-V applications crash on exit when Citrix EdgeSight is installed

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 08:34 AM PST

eThis isn't really App-V specific but since this is our short-term temporary home for UE-V content I wanted to post a quick heads up. We just published a new KB article about an issue where Microsoft User Experience Virtualization (UE-V) environments that also have the Citrix EdgeSight client agent installed may see 64-bit applications crash on exit. You'll also see an Event ID: 1000 logged in the Application log but you can get all the details here:

KB2808222 - 64-Bit UE-V applications crash on exit when Citrix EdgeSight is installed (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2808222)

Computer based targeting in App-V 5.0

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 06:20 AM PST

Good Afternoon

I was wondering is someone can direct me in the right direction around targeting App-V 5.0 Packages to computers rather than users.   This way I can publish Project/Visio to the licensed computers.

I have changed the global refresh to being True as per a blog post I found, however only the packages that are assigned to the user are being published to the client computer.

The client computer is in the AD group that is assigned to the package, and I have updated the GPO that applies the App-V client configuration.  I have even manually tried updating the App-V client to pick up the new changes

Not sure what else to check?

thanks in advance
