Posted: 15 Jan 2013 02:06 AM PST

Dell today released version 6.3 of Dell vOPS Server Explorer. vOPS Server Explorer originally developed by VKernel provided assessment tooling for virtualization administrators. VKernel was acquired by Quest in November 2011, and since Quest now owned by DELL, VKernel assets are now part of DELL as well. vOPS Server Explorer is delivered as a fully configured virtual machine, which can be installed on either VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, or Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.

Version 6.3 of vOPS Server Explorer, which is provided as freeware adds two new utilities, Storage Explorer and Change Explorer. Dell also provides a paid version called vOPS Server Standard providing additonional value with capacity and performance monitoring capabilities. Environment Explorer now also displays VM Density, Zombie VMs, Rightsizing savings and Changes.

Storage Explorer

  • Extensive storage performance and capacity views across datastores and VMs
  • Identifies critical datastore issues such as overcommitment, low capacity, high latency, VMFS version mismatch
  • Identifies critical VM issues such as low available disk space, high latency and throughput
  • Allows user to sort on any metric to find specific issues relevant to them

Change Explorer

  • Lists all changes that occurred to datacenters, clusters, resource pools, hosts, datastores and VMs within the last seven days with associated risk impact
  • Allows user to filter on object name, user and type to find specific changes
  • Number of changes also represented graphically over time to be able to see when they are occurring

AppV 5 Reporting Error while uploading reporting data

Posted: 14 Jan 2013 11:55 PM PST

stumbled upon this error yesterday while trying to upload logs to the reporting server from the client
while browsing to the reporting server itself I can see that "method no allowed" web page means that the iis pool is ok
log from the ps session is attached.

and the event viewer shows Event ID: 17006
and inside the event all I get is: Reporting data cache could not be sent to Reporting Server. (rc = 0x9E900713-0x13).

any advice would be helpful.
even how to get more info about that error, how to debug it even more.
"reporting data cache could not be sent" doesn't help me much, I need to know why so if you know any way let me know

thanks!

Release: Stratus ftServer Systems with vSphere 5.1

Posted: 14 Jan 2013 12:13 PM PST

On January 9, Stratus Technologies announced the availability of the new Stratus ftServer systems with vSphere 5.1

The fault tolerant system company, founded 1980 and headquartered in Massachusetts, launched, in September 2012, the sixth generation ftServer that integrates into existing infrastructures and the vendor says that is able to provide uptime of 99.999% for the server and equivalent to 5.26 minutes of downtime annually, using the vSphere hypervisor apparently with very few staff oversight.

The Fault tolerant Server allows the server to ride through hardware faults unaffected, while vSphere HA software does nothing to protect the underlying server from downtime. In case of a failure with HA software alone, VMs would fail over to another host and applications restarted.
Stratus ftServer System with vSphere 5.1 features (from the press release):

  • Uptime of 99.999% or better in continuous operation, including the hypervisor
  • Single and dual Intel 8-core processors, including with hyper-threading and QuickPath architecture on high-end systems
  • Full symmetric multi-processing (SMP) for powerful fault-tolerant computing without compromise
  • Embedded 10Gb Ethernet for processing high-volume network traffic associated the higher number of VMs supported, as well as with, vMotion, NFS, iSCSI, etc.
  • Proactive availability monitoring and system management that prevents outages from occurring, unlike failure-recovery solutions
  • Root-cause analysis and repair of server and OS issues without interrupting processing
  • Plug-and-play simplicity using off-the-shelf editions of vSphere software
  • Minimal system overhead of  <5% and no need to over-provision hardware for uptime
  • A bullet-proof infrastructure that prepares the IT organization to move to the cloud
