Playing 20 Questions with Project Accelerator

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 05:00 PM PST

Over a year ago (August 2011) we released an update to the Citrix Desktop Accelerator. That was a major update, as it provided a list of design decisions you would answer in order to properly design your XenDesktop solution. It's great that we provided all of those decisions, but we started to wonder if people even knew how to answer them correctly? Could most people…

XenApp 6.5 Hosted Shared Desktop sizing example

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 02:20 PM PST

In an ideal world, every project would include time for scalability testing so that the right number of optimally specified servers can be ordered. However, there are various reasons why this doesn't always take place, including time and budgetary constraints. And often architects are asked to provide their best guess on the resources required to support a VDI environment. My last post provided guidance on the optimal XenApp virtual machine specification. Now in the last post of the series, I'm going to walk through an example sizing exercise.

KB: Error granting access to an App-V package: Invalid input was passed

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 01:25 PM PST

imageHere's one more App-V KB article we published today. This one discusses and issue where using the Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) Management Server website to grant access to a package to an Active Directory group fails. There are a couple different error messages you might get but they all come down to an issue with permissions on the AD containers. You can get all the details here:

Install from license site fails

Posted: 14 Jan 2013 01:48 PM PST

I've downloaded the app-v 5.0 package from the volume license site as an iso then burned the disc. When i try to run the install of any of the 3: client, server, or sequencer the install fails and says it's not compatible with my version of windows. I've tried on win 7 x64 and server 2008 R2 sp1. i've also installed the prereqs, .net 4 full and powershell 3.0. The documentation says the install will detect if c++ has to be installed but it never makes it that far. what am i missing or is it a known issue that the installer package from the VL site is corrupt? Thanks for any replies

KB: The Server App-V sequencing process fails with "The Sequencer could not stop the MSIServer service"

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 08:53 AM PST

imageHere's a new KB we published on an issue in App-V where the sequencer errors out and package creation fails. We've seen this a few times and it basically comes down to not having all the latest updates applied to the sequencing computer so the fix is pretty straight forward. You can read the entire article here:

Any Documents on delivering App-V 5.0 via RDS

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 06:51 AM PST

We are looking at moving to the world of App-V 5.0 as part of our Windows 7 migration project.  Using the MS TechNet site I have put together a simple App-V server and managed to sequence and app and deploy it to a client device.

One of our requirements is to deliver App-V via RDS to our client devices, does anyone have a link to any documents or blogs that explain this for 5.0.

I have downloaded the App-V for RDS client but then got stuck trying to work out what I need to next

any help would be appreciated

Citrix Launches Free Tool to Take Guesswork Out of Desktop Virtualization

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 08:39 AM PST

On behalf of the Project Accelerator team, I am very excited to announce that the Citrix Project Accelerator beta, a new tool for implementing virtual desktops, is now available.                       The idea was simply to make our customers and partners wildly successful with their desktop virtualization deployments – and to help people who are considering desktop virtualization…

Change AppV 4.6 Client Publishing Server using Group Policy

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 07:09 AM PST

Hi

I recently posted a thread on these forums relating to retrospectively implementing redundancy to a live App-V infrastructure using Windows NLB. I now have both servers up and running and have successfully tested RTSP streaming using the NLB hostname. My next step is to switch over the existing live clients to use the new NLB host.

I had mistakenly thought I could change the publishing server configured in the AppV client using the Group Policy admin template but have since discovered this is not possible. This was initially configured at the client installation stage. I've noticed that if I manually add a new Publishing Server in the App-V client it creates a new key under the following registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\Client\DC Servers.

Is it possible for me to switch the existing clients to the new server by deleting this key and writing a new one configured for the new server or can it only be achieved by reinstalling the client? The tests I've done seem to indicate deleting/recreating the DC Server key works but I wasn't sure if this was a supported method of achieving this or whether there is an easier way.

Thanks in advance

Release: Citrix Access Gateway 10.0.71.6014.e

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 07:23 AM PST

Citrix released CloudGateway 2.5 and together is releasing Citrix Access Gateway 10-0-71.6014 e

Citrix CloudGateway is the Citrix Enterprise Mobility offering and Citrix Access Gateway provides remote access to the whole infrastructure.

The remote access solution Access Gateway offers Receiver configuration using Email based discovery and integrats with Storefront and AppController.

New features with this release:

  1. Seamless Desktop Receiver experience: With this release of Access Gateway, end users will no longer have to sign into their Access Gateway plug-ins as a manual step, to access apps / sites that require a full SSL tunnel. Receivers automatically launch a SSL VPN session via Access Gateway as needed. Result is – end user just deals with Citrix Receiver and Receiver internally (and automatically) deals with Access Gateway on user's behalf.
  2. EPA with ICAProxy / CVPN: Receivers can now seamlessly launch AG plug-ins to connect to an Access Gateway vServer configured with End Point Analysis policies, in ICAProxy and CVPN modes as well. Earlier, this was supported only for Full Tunnel access.
  3. Session Sharing: Receiver and AG plug-in have always been two separate entities, and because of that, they establish two parallel sessions with Access Gateway. With this release, we have added the smarts in our Receiver and Access Gateway integration, to understand each other, and be able to share the same session with Access Gateway appliance. Good News – this now leads to simplified access from end user perspective, and optimal session/license consumption from Administrator perspective.
  4. Device Wipe/Lock support for AppController: With CloudGateway 2.5, AppController is launching the ability to register and track mobile devices via AppController. These registered mobile devices can then be locked / wiped, if the need be. Access Gateway now has the ability to support this functionality when the devices are external to the enterprise.
  5. UI Theme Customization: With this release of Citrix Access Gateway, administrators will now be able to apply UI themes to their Access Gateways. Themes can be selected from amongst: Citrix Default Theme, Citrix Receiver Green Bubble Theme and Custom. Note that Custom theme can only be applied, but the customization of the web pages, to build this custom theme, continues to be a manual process.
