Survey: VMware vSphere storage reservation

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 09:44 AM PDT

Frank Denneman senior technical marketing architect within the Cloud Infrastructure Product Marketing group at VMware is conducting a survey about storage reservation, a feature coming to vSphere which is currently in development.

The current version of Storage I/O Control provides tools to prioritize and provide fairness to I/O streams of virtual machines. However the current version does not provide a function to specify number of IOPS to guarantee a minimum level. Because the storage subsystem can be shared, external workloads can impact the performance capacity (in terms of IOPS) of the datastores and therefore a guarantee cannot be met temporarily. This is one of the challenges that must be taken into account when developing storage reservations and we must understand how stringent you want the guarantee to be.

You can take the survey here.

Paper: Top Six Tips for Configuring vSphere Resource Pools

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 09:35 AM PDT

Quest Software, which is now part of Dell has released a paper titled: "Top Six Tips for Configuring vSphere Resource Pools". The paper which contains 7 pages is written by Greg Shields, a VMware vExpert. The Paper details six key tips to keep in mind when configuring resource pools in VMware vSphere.

Resource pools aren't going anywhere. In fact, as our industry continues its slow embrace of cloud computing, we're likely to see more of resource pools in the near to midterm future. No matter whether you're cloud-bound or sticking with classic virtualization for now, keep an eye on your resource pools and remember these six key tips for using them wisely.

The paper can be downloaded after registration on the website of Dell.

Airplanes and Events and Hotels Oh My: Harnessing the Power of XenDesktop’s Offline Capabilities

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 07:57 AM PDT

Although the availability of Internet access has undoubtedly increased, it's often the case that the quality of these Internet connections can fluctuate dramatically. It's actually rare today to encounter scenarios when there's no Internet access at all (i.e. running "disconnected"), but it is quite common to run into situations where the Internet access is painfully slow or bounces in and out. While other VDI solutions run…

SMB: The place to be

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 07:53 AM PDT

At the onset of 2012, I laid out my goals as the new Citrix Americas Channel Chief, which included a larger investment in the SMB market.  In July, I informed you that as part of that commitment no Citrix field resources (Sales Reps, SE's, etc.) would be compensated for SMB sales, and the partner community would become our sole field based sales team for all…

VMware starts VMware Hosted Beta Program

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 08:08 AM PDT

Duncan Epping posted today in his personal blog that VMware opened a new Hosted Beta Program, based on the same technologies used for the Hands-On Labs (HOL) at VMworld, that allows registered users to try VMware's  products in pre-build online Lab environments supported with guided workflows.

As Duncan says:

.. without the need to build-out infrastructure onsite ..

.. is a great opportunity to test-drive products and provide VMware with your feedback on the features still under development. On top of that this will allow you to spend 1-2 hour blocks to get acquainted with new technology, without the need to be on-site. You can do this at the office, or at home with just a connection to the internet.

If you are interested and want to learn more about the VMware Beta Program you can go here:http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/beta

If you are interested in joining the VMware Beta Program you can either work with your VMware account team or submit a participation request form found here:http://communities.vmware.com/community/beta/betainterest

Organisational culture remains a significant barrier to flexible working in Ireland

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 03:41 AM PDT

A recent study amongst Ireland's businesses indicates a significant disconnect between the surge in personal and smart mobile devices in the Irish workplace and policies in place to support flexible working. Seventy three per cent of the 336 businesses questioned indicated that their organisation does not currently support a flexible or mobile working culture, citing "loss of control" as the biggest fear. Of those respondents, most significantly, 57 per cent are not considering changing the working culture to adopt flexible working at all.
